Neuronest London

Developed in 2023 under our pseudonym ArchiSense, in collaboration with a team of artists and educators, in response to the Davidson Prize open call.

“Exploring relationships between homelessness, neurodivergence and architecture.”

Neuronest London begins from the prevalence of homelessness among neurodivergent people, and from the lack of support systems for navigating employment, relationships and access to suitable housing.

Design that responds to the needs of at-risk individuals can contribute to mental and physical wellbeing, to a sense of inclusion and purpose, and to social integration. The proposal occupies a brownfield site in Dulwich, South London, reusing existing urban fabric rather than clearing it. Living spaces are adjustable to different sensory needs, and the plan is kept legible so that residents can read where they are and how to move through it, which supports a sense of control, safety and rest.

Four buildings sit around a central courtyard, giving each access to daylight and ventilation. Communal and support areas at ground floor, alongside quiet and decompression spaces, connect through a corridor overlooking the garden. Flexible spaces can be let for co-working or used for hosted activities such as art classes, drawing residents into contact with each other and with the wider neighbourhood.

Support organisations operate from within the scheme, providing access to specialist healthcare and to employment through partnerships with local businesses.
